The Church of our Lady of the Rosary

About The Church of our Lady of the Rosary:
Considered one of the earliest Churches of Goa, The Church of our Lady of the Rosary symbolizes the blend of the European and the Indian elements. One of the finest churches in Goa, The Church of our Lady of the Rosary attracts lot of tourists from all over the world. The wall frescos the church reveal Hindu designs. With the passage of time , the Portuguese panache for spreading their religion had become very rigid and intolerant. This led the demolition of the temples and these were replaced with the construction of the churches. The exploration of the interiors of the Goa will reveal four & a half centuries of Latin Catholicism. The Church of our Lady of the Rosary signifies the power and the glory of the previous rulers. The church is dedicated to Lady of Immaculate Conception.
Church Building:
The Church of our Lady of the Rosary is situated at the top of the western side of the Holy hill or Monte Santo overlooking the Mandovi river and Divar Island. This is the same site that witnessed the victory of the troops led by Alfonso de Albuquerque in the year 1510. Its status was raised to that of a church in 1543 and was handed on to the Franciscans. Held in great veneration by the locals, it was here St. Francis Xavier used to teach catechism every evening. The building structure resembles that of a fortress, that has openings in order to keep a track of the invaders trying to enter. The design is very simple yet truly elegant. There is a tombstone of Garcia de Sa, one of the early governors of Goa, in front of the altar. A great example of "Manueline" style architecture belonging to the early Portuguese. While the exterior displays the exquisite splendor of the architecture, the interior is also simple with five main altar that bears the image of Nossa Senhora de Rozario or Our Lady of the Rosary. Its because of the historical importance attached with the church, it is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Goa.
