About The Church of Mae de Deus:
The Church of Mae de Deus is one of the most popular churches of Goa. The popularity of the church has only grown with the passage of time over the years due to its feast celebration that is held by The Church of Mae de Deus. The feast is held on the first Sunday of May every year. The whole occasion ends in a grand way with the procession in reverence of Our Lady invoking her blessings on the village of Saligão. A grand fair is held with sweets, toys and refreshments throughout the day. Every year the feast of 'Mae de Deus' that is conducted with the support of the Saligão Sporting Club is held in a grand way. The traditional dance 'Foxes' Nite' is one of the important feature of the feast that is held every year. It attracts people from all over Goa and the world. The dance is held on the Saligão Sporting ground beside the beautifully decorated Mae de Deus Church.

Church Building:
The Church of Mae de Deus, building is visually splendid. Its simply a visual treat that attracts tourist from all over and has consistently been one of the popular tourist attractions of Goa. The church has a Gothic structure and has an astounding presence for the last 127 years. It was in the year 1867 that the foundation stone was laid down and the chapel was enhanced to the status of Church in 1873. The church received blessings in the year 1873. The statue of the mother god that is kept at the side of the altar was brought from the extinct Convent of Mother of God from Daugim, Old Goa.
There is also a 9 day novena held in the honor of the Lady. Each day's novena is organized by a different ward of Saligão and at the end of a day, children dressed in bright dresses dance before the Lady and venerate her with flowers. Live and exciting entertainment waits everyday after the novena with either a band performance or some other programs. Spectacular fireworks during the feast also attracts the tourists and the locals alike.
