About Church and Convent of Saint Monica:
Church and Convent of Saint Monica is situated adjacent to the Chapel of St. Anthony and faces north on Monte Santo. Sanctioned in the year 1598, this church had its foundation laid by the Archbishop Dom Frei Alexio de Menezes who was also the then Governor of Portuguese India 1606. The construction work of the church was completed in the 1627. Church and Convent of Saint Monica came to be known as Royal Monastery of Santa Monica. Large enough to accommodate over 100 nuns and the widows, Church and Convent of Saint Monica, gave shelter to the many homeless ladies and saved from the wrath of the society. The convent was open to all nuns, European, Eurasian and also to those of local extraction. The church is one of the important churches of Goa. Famous for its miraculous incident , this church has always attracted lot of visitors world over and is one of the popular tourist attraction of Goa.

Church Building:
The Church building is huge and three storey high. There is a huge enclosure that provided all the necessary comforts to those who were a part of the convent. There were large gardens full of aromatic plants and beautiful flowers, with which the nuns used to adorn the altars. There were 12 walls provided water for irrigation purpose. The exterior of the building was a blend of the Tuscan, Corinthian and composite style. While the interior adorned the Doric and composite style. Its greatest length is 175 feet and breadth 36 feet. The church facade has the statue of Santa Monica and the symbol of the Holy Ghost. The facade is supported by three solid buttresses. The nave has two divisions, The first makes up the principal part with two side altars and the main altar consists of the image of Santa Monica, mother of St. Augustine, to whom the convent and the church is dedicated.
Surmounting the altar in the tribune, rises the the famous “Miraculous Cross”, 108” high. Legend says, that On February 8th 1636, this image opened its eyes and was seen moving while blood appeared to flow from its wounds. This miracle occurred once again in that month in the presence of the viceroy and other officials. Investigation concluded it to be miraculous indeed. The image has since been held in great veneration.
