About Convent and Church of St. Francis Assisi:
Convent and Church of St. Francis Assisi is placed in the western part of the Se Cathedral. A beautiful building constructed in between 1517-1521 AD, initially it was a chapel and later on got converted to a church dedicated in the honor of the Holy Ghost in 1602 AD. There use to be a convent within the church compound which was later on closed by the Portuguese government. The church was converted to a museum by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1964. Convent and Church of St. Francis Assisi has an exquisite collection of artifacts, paintings and pieces of Hindu temple sculptures from Goa. The Convent and Church of St. Francis Assisi was created by the Franciscan friars, eight of whom came to Old Goa in 1517. Convent and Church of St. Francis Assisi is one of the popular churches in Goa. Its close proximity with the Se Cathedral has also made it one of the popular tourist attractions of Goa.
Church Building:
The church adjoining the Convent building was demolished in the year 1661 and was rebuilt again but it retained its old gate made of black stone and exquisitely carved. The courtyard and an old large cross made of black stone is one of the special feature of the church. The external architecture is inspired by Tuscan style and the interior is depicts the mosaic-Corinthian style. Its length is about 190 feet and its breadth about 60 feet. The interior part of the church is heavily adorned with scenes from the bible and the walls have frescoes showing intricate floral designs. The statue of St. Michael can be found on the facade. There is a wooden statue of St. Francis of Assisi adorns a pedestal in one of its chapels. Only three of the total nine altars and six chapels possessed remain today. The main altar has a richly carved niche with a synagogue supported by four evangelists . Just above the synagogue is the huge statue of St. Francis of Assisi and statue of Jesus on the Cross of same stature. Presently the church is not used for any religious activities or functions.
