Festivals of Goa

Goa has scores of festivals celebrated all around the year. Despite the long period of Portuguese colonisation, Hindu festivals have retained their unique Goan character and are celebrated with deep fervour. Since most of the population of Goa is Hindu till date almost all the Hindu festivals are celebrated in Goa. There festivals of Goa celebrate both the Hindu and the Christian festivals. Some of the famous festivals of Goa are:
  • Christmas: like elewhere in the world December 25 is celebrated in Goa too as the nativity of Jesus Christ with great pomp and traditional gaiety. It in fact, cuts the limits of the church to spill across the streets for all to participate. It is the time for exchanging gifts in Goa as also is the time for pudings and cakes.

  • Diwali: is te day when the festive focus shifts from the city stores and markets to homes and hearths. Everyone wishes everyone else with warmth and affection. Goa wears a festive look with colorful “Akashdive” or skylamps and festoons.




  • Food & Cultural Festival of Goa: this is a 5-day festival planned to give special focus on Goa with reference to Seafood and Goan's endeavour for poetry, painting and music. Goan's have elevated style of cooking. It is a significant festivals of Goa. This festival in fact, celebrates the Goan style of cooking and Goan food.

  • Ganesh Chaturthi: the Ganesh festival is one packed with fun and frolic, it is the time for prayer and worship as well. It is an occasion to clean and decorate the house. It is a time to receive the divine guest Ganesh.

  • Goa Carnival: Among the various colorful feasts and festivals that are celebrated in Goa, the Goa Carnival is the most eagerly awaited. is a non-stop 3 days festival of color, song and music. The carnival provides a healthy atmosphere for all, young and old. This is another important festivals of Goa.
