Among the various colorful feasts and festivals that are celebrated in Goa, the Goa Carnival is the most eagerly awaited. The concept of 'Carvival' is exclusive and unique to Goa and was introduced by the Portuguese who ruled over Goa for over five hundred years. This is a three days festivals promarily celebrated by Christians. But the Goa Carnival has absorbed the Hindu tradition revelry, western dance forms and turned into a spectacular ceremony. Though it started as a celebration enjoyed only by the local people but now it has crossed the state frontiers and attracts thousands of people from all over the country. The carnival is held in february in Goa for three days and nights. The legendary king momo takes over the state and streets come alive with music and color. Then begins the week long festivity which is the time for uncurved festivity and merry making.

This Goa Carnival is suppose to be a feasting-drinking-merrymaking eveny just before the austere 40 days of Lent. Huge parades were organized throughout the state. There are dances, grand balls and floats organized on the streets of the city throughout evening and nights. The carnival ends with the famous red-and-black dance held by the Clube National in Panajim on the final day. The origin and nature of the carnival can traced back to the epicurean feasts of ancient Rome and Grece. These carnivals then gradually in Spainish and Portuguese colonies and became known for their singing, dancing and drinking. The carnival is presided over by King Momo who in the opening ceremony orders his subjects to party.
Hotel bookings must be done in advance as the Goa Carnival attracts thousands of tourists. The carnival is not celebrated anywhere else in India. Even in te last few years of Portuguese rule, the carnival was on its decline. Its revival is marked with the Liberation of Goa. The carnival is now celebrated with huge luxury, pomp and gaiety primarily to attract tourists.
