Overview of Goa

Located on the west coast of India Goa is the smallest state in terms of area. It is bounded by the state of Maharashtra to the north and by Karnataka to the east and south. The Arabian sea forms its western border. Panaji is the capital of the state. An etymological overview of Goa shows that that state gradually develops from a portuguese colony, but the origin of the state is unclear. The Indian epic “Mahabharata” refers to the area, that is now known as Goa, as 'Goparashtra' or 'Govarashtra'. An historical overview of Goa can be streatched back to 3rd century BC when it was a part of the Maurya Empire. In 1312 Goa came under the Delhi Sultanate. By 1370, it was added to the Vijaynagar empire. In 1498 Vasco da Gama became the first European to set foot in India through sea. He landed in Calicut, present Kozhikode in Kerala, followed by his arrival in what is known today as old Goa.
The Portuguese arrived with the intention of setting up a colony and seizing the control of the spice trade from other European powers. Later, in 1510 Portuguese admiral Afonso de Albuquerque defeated the ruling Bijapur kings with the help of a local ally and finally established a permanent settlement in Velha Goa or old Goa.

The Portuguese intended it to be a colony and a naval base. The climatic overview of Goa shows that the state is located between the tropical zone enar the Arabian sea. The climate is mostly warm and humid throughout the year. The month of May is the hottest maonth when the temperature exceeds over 35°C and is coupled with high humidity. For tourists, the culture and beaches of Goa are the main attractions.
