History of Goa

The history of Goa can be stretched back to the 3rd century BC when it was a part of the Maurya empire. It was later ruled by the Satvahanas of Kolhapur and it then passed to the Chalukyas of Badami. For the next few centuries Goa was ruled succesively by the Silharas, the Kadambas and the Chalukyas of Kalyani and other rulers of Deccan India. The Kadambas, a local Hindu dynasty based at Chandrapura, in present day Chandor-Salcete laid an ineradicable mark in the pre-colonial history and culture of Goa. In 1312 Goa came under the rule of the Delhi Sultanate. But in 1370, the kingdom was forced to resign to Harohara I of the Vijaynagar empire.
Till 1469 the Vijaynagar ruler held the terrotiry of Goa and then it passed over to the Bahamani Sultans of Gulbarga. After the dynasty of Bahamani crumbled, the Adil Shahis of Bijapur made Goa their auxiliary capital. The history of Goa changed with the arrival of Vasco da Gama in 1498.

Vasco da Gama is the first European to landed on the soil of India through sea. He landed in Calicut, the present day Kozhikode in Kerala. This is followed by his arrival in old Goa. The Portuguese arrived with the aim of seting up colony and thereby confiscationg the the control of spice trade from other European countries. With the imposition of the Inquisition many of the local people of Goa was converted to christianity by missionaries. But still many converts retained their Hindu heritage. To the escape the inquisition and harassment, thousands fled away from the state to the neighboring states of Mangalore and Karwar in Karnataka. With the arrival of other European powers in India in the 16th century, most Portuguese possession in India was surrendered to British and Dutch. But the history of Goa shows a peculiarity. As the Portuguese continued their possession in Goa.
