Shahouri Masjid

Goa is considered as the smallest Indian state in terms of its area and regarding population, the place is considered as the fourth smallest in the country. Located in the west coast of India in the Konkan region, the state is bounded by the Karnataka to the east and south, while the Arabian Sea forms its western coast. Panaji is the capital of Goa and Vasco da Gama is the largest city popularly called as Vasco. There are many temples and mosques located in Goa the Shahouri Masjid also called as the Safa masjid is one such religious destination. It is a famous Islamic shrine in Ponda, commonly regarded the citadel of Hindu pilgrimages in Goa.
The Shahouri Masjid was built in the year 1560 by Ibrahim Adil Shah, the Sultan of Bijapur. The mosque survived the devastation brought by the colonizers as part of the Inquisition process. During the reign of Bijapur Sultan, the mosque was completely renovated. The Shahouri Masjid is very elegantly represented and it reflects an elegant spectacle with typical Islamic arches decorating the walls. Previously the Shahouri Masjid was located at the center of a grand complex with gardens. There is also a rectangular prayer hall in the mosque that rests above a high base and is covered using a terracotta tile roof.

Shahouri Masjid also has one grand water tank within the premises and is also a major point of attraction. The tank features many small chambers all decorated with 'meharab' designs, unlike most mosques, the tank is located to the south of the prayer hall where it is located outside the main entrance. Shahouri Masjid is considered as a venue of celebration during Muslim festivals like Id-Ul-Fitr and Id-Ul-Zuha. The Shahouri Masjid is located at about 2 km west of the centre of Ponda town.
