Shri Bhagavati temple in Goa is believed to be about 500 years old. The temple has some special implication which is that there are two giant images of elephants carved from black stone guarding the entrance of the temple. The temple also has an imposing statue of Goddess Bhagavati Ashtabhuja, another form of Goddess Durga. Shri Bhagavati temple is dedicated to Shree Shantadurga, an incarnation of Goddess Parvati, consort of Lord Shiva.
It is one of the rare temples in Bardez that managed to survive the Portuguese Inquisition. During the time of the Portuguese invasion the deity was later on shifted from the house of Shree Kichkar of Taliwada, Mapusa to Sanquelim; a place which was a part of the Maratha kingdom of Sawantwadi. Later on the idol was again installed at Dhargal in Pernem in the year 1550. Shri Bhagavati temple every year organizes one famous festival called as Zatra and it falls in the month of December pulling enough crowds not only within Goa but also from various other regions of India.
One other principal festival to be organized at the Shri Bhagavati temple is the
"Bhajanisaptah" and "Shimgo.
