Temple of Shri Mangesh at Priol- Ponda Taluka

The Temple of Shri Mangesh at Priol- Ponda Taluka is located at about 1 km from Mardol close to Nagueshi, 22 kms from Panaji the capital of Goa and 26 kms from Margao. This temple is considered as one of the largest, most enchanting, serene and most frequently visited temples in Goa. The Temple of Shri Mangesh at Priol- Ponda Taluka is dedicated to lord Mangueshi an incarnation of lord Shiva. The deity is regarded as Kuldevta by many Hindus and the Saraswat Brahmins. Hindus also call Him as Saib which refers the Lord of Goa. It is believed that The Mangesh Linga have been consecrated on the mountain of Mangireesh on the banks of river Bhagirathi by Lord Brahma , from where it was brought by the Saraswat Brahmins to Trihotrapuri in Bihar.
From there the deity was again brought to Gomantaka and settled at Mathagrama, the present-day Madgoa. Finally the most sacred and the ancient deity were established in a temple on the banks of the river Gomati or Zuari as it is called today.

The 400 year old temple stands still with its elegant structure. The beautiful temple is noted for the pillars which are considered to be most beautiful among the temples of Goa. One beautifully designed seven storied deepstambha stands at the gates in the temple complex. There is also a huge water tank within the temple premises.



The Temple of Shri Mangesh at Priol- Ponda Taluka also includes one Sabha Griha which is a spacious hall with accommodation capacity of more than 500. The temple is beautifully decorated with the chandeliers of the nineteenth century. The Garbha Griha or the sanctum sanctorum where the image of the lord Mangesh resides is led by the Sabha Griha. The temple has shrines of Parvati and Ganesha. The other deities in the temple include Nandikeshvar, Vatsa gotra, Bhagavati and the Gramapurusha Deva Sharma of the Gajana.
