Shri Shantadurga Temple

In terms of area Goa is considered as the smallest state in India. It is the fourth smallest in the country in terms of its population. The state is located in the west coast of India in the Konkan region. The entire state is bounded by the Karnataka to the east and south, while the Arabian Sea forms its western coast. Panaji is the capital of Goa and Vasco da Gama is the largest city popularly called as Vasco. Margao the historic city of the state still has dominant impact of Portuguese culture.

The Shri Shantadurga Temple is situated at about 33 kms from Panajim with idol of Hindu deity Shree Durga; the shakti who mediated between Shree Vishnu and Shiva and stopped the fierce war between the two.
The idol of the goddess is flanked by Shiva and Vishnu from both sides. Shri Shantadurga Temple important deity of Hindu culture is located in Kavlem in Ponda district of North Goa.

Shri Shantadurga Temple has the deity of Shree Jagdamba whose incarnation was to establish peace between Shree Vishnu and Shree Shiva, and hence was known as Shree Shantadurga devi.



Shri Shantadurga Temple was originally located at Keloshi from her original spot the deity was shifted to Kavlem during the Portuguese government. The present structure of Shri Shantadurga was built during the period from 1713 A.D. to 1738 A.D. since then many renovations have been done to the main temple and also to the temple with other deities. The agarshala or the guest house has also been built on three different sides of the temple. The principal temples of Shanata Durga are at Fatorpa in Quepem taluka, which is visited by thousands of believers from all over Goa.
