The Statue of Abbe Faria is a magnificent piece of art and is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Goa. Simply an amazing piece of art, The Statue of Abbe Faria has been sculpted by none other then the sculptor Ramchandra Kamat. The Statue of Abbe Faria has a very elegant look and stands gracefully on the pedestal near the old secretariat in Panaji. There is also a small plaque commemorating the birth place at Candolim.

He was an Indo – Portuguese monk who made a terrific break through in the scientific study of Hypnotism following the work of Franz Anton Mesmer who claimed that hypnosis was mediated by “ animal magnetism”. Unlike Mesmer, Abbe Faria believed in the theory of “lucid sleep” . He faced lot of opposition from the religious groups for his theories. In fact he was the first individual in Goa receive both opposition and the praise from the local press of the time regarding his active involvement and indulgence in the hypnotism controversies during his life and even after his death. No body understood him during his lifetime, and there were even fewer who tried to understand his theories and ideas after his death. Abbe Faria was immortalized by the famous French novelist, Alexander der Duma in his novel-'The Count of Monte Cristo' (1844).
With the passage of time after his death, eventually his works came to be recognized. It was Abbe de Faria who discovered inducing and interrupting trance verbally but by a suggestive method. He focused on the psychological explanations that were the key to unfolding the mysteries of the hypnotism. The end of the father of hypnotism was an unfortunate misery. Very popular in France and Portugal, efforts were undertaken to retrace his his tomb in Paris but was not not successful. Truly an amazing inspiration for all, this statue is worth a visit by the visitors.
