Named after the river on whose banks it is situated, the fort is simply majestic and impressive for its architecture. Historic records reveal that the fort was built by Maharaja Sawant Bhosle and was captured by Portuguese Viceroy Dom Pedro Miguel de Almeida in the middle of the 18th century. The fort was again rebuilt after the capture. At present the Terekhol Fort Goa houses a heritage hotel. There is church within the fort premises that is dedicated in honor of St. Antony and which is more than a century old. Normally the church is closed to the general public but is accessible on special occasions and festivals.
One of the unique feature of the fort is the breathtaking view from the bulwarks of the fort which is simply amazing.
